El ministro regional de Ashanti, Kofi Opoku-Manu, recientemente ha provocado gran controversia debido a los comentarios que hizo durante un discurso dirigido a los seguidores del partido en el poder, el Congreso Nacional Democrático [1], el 6 de enero.
De acuerdo con Ato-Kwamena Dadzie [2], de Ghana, Opoku-Manu “urgió a los seguidores del partido a recurrir a la violencia para resolver sus diferencias“.
Dadzie refiere en su artículo, “Opoku-Manu debe irse [3]” con una cita directa del ministro regional:
If you can slap him, do so.
Si lo puedes abofetear, hazlo.
Dadzie afirma:
Comments like these are reckless and irresponsible. You don’t expect a man in Mr. Opoku-Manu’s position to utter them. But he did.
Two days later, he had no recollection of what he had said until a recording was played back to him. That was when he came to his senses, acknowledged his momentous folly and offered an apology, which only came after some big wigs within the government instructed to clear the mess he has created.
Comentarios como estos son temerarios e irresponsables. Uno no espera de un hombre que está en la posición del señor Opoku-Manu que los diga. Pero lo hizo.
Dos días después, él no recordaba lo que había dicho hasta que le fue mostrada una grabación. Ahí fue cuando se dio cuenta, reconoció su disparate momentáneo y ofreció una disculpa, la cual no se produjo sino hasta que algunos altos mandos al interior del gobierno ordenaron limpiar el desorden que él había creado.
Abajo está la disculpa de Opoku-Manu citada por Dadzie:
I’ll be the last person to advocate for warfare of any type and having listened to this myself, I must say I really feel sorry.
Yo sería la última persona en fomentar una guerra de ninguna especie y, al escuchar esto, debo decir que realmente me siento apenado.
Dadzie puntualiza con este comentario:
But he didn’t stop there. He offered a veiled defense. He claims he was speaking in a “charged environment”, implying that he wasn’t using his head. He was speaking by heart. You could say he was farting with his mouth.
For opening his mouth too wide to spew such dangerous nonsense, Mr. Opoku-Manu has shown himself to be an irresponsible man who doesn’t deserve to occupy the position he does. He must be sacked. And if there is anyone who deserves a hefty slap it is him. That half-hearted apology he offered only after he had been instructed to do so is not enough.
He must go.
Pero él no se detuvo ahí. Él ofreció una defensa velada. Él asegura que estaba hablando en un “ambiente cargado“, dando a entender que no estaba usando su cabeza. Él estaba hablando de corazón. Podría decirse que estaba pedorreándose por la boca.
Por abrir demasiado su boca para vomitar disparates tan peligrosos, el señor Opoku-Manu ha mostrado que es un hombre irresponsable que no merece ocupar la posición que tiene. Él debe ser despedido. Y si alguien se merece una fuerte bofetada, ese es él. La disculpa indiferente que solo ofreció hasta que fue obligado a hacerla, no es suficiente.
Él debe irse.

At a time when Ghana's democracy is in its infancy, the last thing we need is someone encouraging political violence. Nobody wants this country to become like Zimbabwe or Iran. He should be made to resign for encouraging people to damage our democracy with political violence. He is an enemy of democracy.

I wonder why people are asking for sacking-sacking doesn't solve the problem. If Ohene Ntow made this statement, what would have happened? If Wereko-Brobby, Jake etc made the statement….What would the BNI/National security do? And people pretend Mills is humane. Sacking him wouldn't stop the order he gave and similar ones given by the Rawlingses, Vanderpuyes, Anyidohos etc. Sack him as RM and bring him to the presidency? This man was the RCC chief director under NPP [4] and that was not enough for him.
If you are born an idiot, you can be 1000years and will still be an idiot that is what OM has confirmed. Is only the fool we sees political appointment as a permanent job. Idiocy can be seeing political appointment as a matter of life and death. By the way Mills is dumb, timid, and powerless and so has not heard/seen anything.
Me pregunto porqué la gente están pidiendo el despido; eso no resuelve el problema. Si Ohene Ntow hubiera hecho esta afirmación, ¿qué habría pasado? Si Wereko-Brobby, Jake, etc., la hubieran hecho…¿qué haría el BNI/seguridad nacional? Y la gente pretende que Mills es humano. El despedirlo no pararía la orden que dio y otras similares dadas por los Rawlings, Vanderpuy, Anyidoh, etc. ¿retirarle el cargo de Ministro Regional y llevarlo a la presidencia? Este hombre fue el director en jefe del RCC bajo el NPP [4] y eso no fue suficiente para él.
Si naces idiota, puedes tener 1000 años y seguirás siendo un idiota eso es lo que OM ha confirmado. Solo el tonto ve el nombramiento político como un empleo permanente. La idiotez puede ser ver el nombramiento político como un asunto de vida o muerte. Por cierto Mills es tonto, tímido, e impotente y no ha escuchado/visto nada.
Nana Poku escribió en su artículo en el Modern Ghana, “Opoku-Manu debe irse, se disculpe o no” [5]:
The more important point is this: how can he assure his political opponents of fairness? How can they trust him to be an honest broker should any matter of political violence come before him as the Chair of REGSEC? How does he ensure the safety and security of the very people he wants beaten up?
I believe he's lost the integrity required for a position as Regional Minister. He must resign or be made to. We were all witnesses to the many cases of intimidation and harassment of political opponents during and after the 2008 elections. The last thing we need in this country is for officials, who should know better, to be purveyors of violence and intimidation, themselves.
La cuestión más importante es la siguiente: ¿cómo puede garantizar rectitud a sus oponentes políticos? ¿cómo pueden ellos confiar en que él sea un intermediario honesto en caso de que cualquier asunto de violencia política se le presente como jefe del REGSEC? ¿cómo asegura la seguridad de la misma gente que él quiere golpear?
Yo creo que ha perdido la integridad requerida para un puesto como Ministro Regional. Él debe renunciar o deben hacerlo renunciar. Todos fuimos testigos de los muchos casos de intimidación y acoso a los opositores políticos durante y después de las elecciones de 2008. Lo último que necesitamos en este país es que los mismos funcionarios, como deberían saberlo, sean promotores de la violencia y la intimidación.
Un comunicado de prensa de la Alianza para la Promoción de la Democracia (AAD), un grupo interesado en el progreso de la democracia de Ghana, posteado por MyJoyOnline [6] afirmaba:
The Alliance for the Advancement of Democracy (AAD) wishes to condemn the Ashanti Regional Minister- Hon. Opoku-Manu for his malicious and distasteful comments made over the weekend; which have the propensity to destabilize the peace and security of this nation.
The Alliance for the Advancement of Democracy (AAD) also views the call by the New Patriotic Party on Hon. Opoku Manu to resign and the subsequent invitation by the appropriate Security agency on the subject matter as most unfortunate and highly hypocritical. AAD believes that, he who seeks equity must come with clean hands and that the New Patriotic Party's blatant disregard and failure to condemn violent acts of the former Central Regional Minister- Hon. Edumadzie, and the similar comments of Hon. Maxwell Kofi Jumah, Hon. Mike Ocquaye, Dr. Nyaho. Tamakloe, etc. as morally reprehensible and ultimately negates any good intent to uphold the rule of law and to consolidate peace and security in Ghana.
AAD believes that the apology of the Ashanti Regional Minister is an indication of gross remorse and must be accepted in good faith but we however insist that his averments militates against his status as the Regional Minister and the Chairman of the Regional Security Council. We therefore hold the strong view that he must honorably resign or the President must find it necessary to remove him from office. During the 2008 General elections, the President was touted as a man of peace (‘asomdwehene’) and must therefore be committed in working with public officials and appointees who reflect his character and principles.
La Alianza para la Promoción de la Democracia (AAD) desea condenar al Ministro Regional de Ashanti, Opoku-Manu, por sus comentarios maliciosos y de mal gusto realizados la semana pasada; los cuales tienden a desestabilizar la paz y la seguridad de esta nación.
La Alianza para la Promoción de la Democracia (AAD) también considera muy desafortunado e hipócrita el llamado del Nuevo Partido Patriótico a Opoku Manu para que renuncie y la subsecuente invitación de la agencia de seguridad correspondiente sobre el asunto en cuestión. La AAD considera que, quien busque equidad, debe tener las manos limpias y cree que es moralmente censurable el descarado descuido del Nuevo Partido Patriótico y su fracaso para condenar los actos violentos del anterior Ministro Regional Central- Edumadzie, y los comentarios similares de Maxwell Kofi Jumah, Mike Ocquaye, Dr. Nyaho. Tamakloe, etc., y por ultimo niega cualquiera buena intención para defender el imperio de la ley y consolidar la paz y la seguridad en Ghana.
La AAD cree que la disculpa del Ministro Regional de Ashanti es un indicio de gran remordimiento y debe ser aceptado de buena fe pero nosotros, no obstante, insistimos en que sus afirmaciones obran en contra de su estatus como Ministro Regional y jefe del Consejo de Seguridad Regional. Nosotros, por tanto, mantenemos la firme postura de que él debe renunciar honorablemente o el Presidente debe considerar necesario removerlo del puesto. Durante las elecciones generales de 2008, el Presidente fue promocionado como un hombre de paz (‘asomdwehene’), por lo cual debe comprometerse a trabajar con funcionarios públicos y personas designadas que reflejen su carácter y principios.
Sonia dejó este comentario en respuesta al comunicado de prensa de AAD:
I have monitored the activities of AAD and have come to the conclusion that their sense of objectivity and insight in national issues must be commended by all well meaning Ghanaians. I wish AFAG and all pressure groups learn from the brains behind AAD. I believe in the point that he who seeks equity must come with clean hands. The NPP must be bold to condemn their own else they will never be taken seriously.
He monitoreado las actividades de la AAD y he llegado a la conclusión de que su sentido de objetividad y agudeza en temas nacionales debe ser elogiado por todos lo ghaneses bien intencionados. Deseo que la AFAG y todos los grupos de presión aprendan de los cerebros detrás de la AAD. Yo creo en la cuestión de que, quien busque equidad debe tener las manos limpias. El NPP debe ser valiente para condenar a los suyos, de lo contrario, nunca serán tomados en serio.
