Más de un millón de refugiados y migrantes han cruzado el mar a Europa el año pasado escapando de guerras y agitación en sus países, en busca de una mejor vida para ellos y sus familias.

La Organización Internacional para la Migración (IOM por su nombre en inglés) puso la cifra en 1,034,745 para el 29 de diciembre. La amplia mayoría de refugiados llegó por mar a Grecia (839,561) e Italia (152,864) y las principales cinco nacionalidades son de Siria, Afganistán, Iraq, Pakistán e Irán.

Una organización con sede en Ámsterdam, Países Bajos, ha vuelto su atención a los refugiados emprendedores entre quienes han llegado, en un intento de ayudarlos a darle buen uso a su visión de negocios con la finalidad de darles una nueva vida en su nuevo hogar. Hablando en nombre del equipo detrás de Entrepreneurial Refugees (Refugiados emprendedores), Tarek Amr nos contó más sobre el  proyecto y lo que quieren lograr. Amr es también colaborador de Global Voices.

GV: ¿De qué se trata este proyecto y por qué se creó?

bidx: Like most people, we – at bidx – have been following the news about the refugees in the past few months, or what some media outlets like to call “refugees crisis”. Our initial thought was: how can we help? Our next thought was: how can we challenge the ongoing misapprehension that refugees are a burden on their new home’s economy, when in fact they can contribute to its growth.

We decided to build an online platform for refugees who are willing to start their own business, to connect them with mentors and investors who can support them. Entrepreneurial refugees upload their business ideas. Volunteers from their new homes join the portal as mentors, to offer advice and help them start their business. We also hope promising ideas will find their way to investors on our platform who are willing to fund them.

bidx: Como la mayoría de gente, -en bidx- hemos estado siguiendo las noticias sobre los refugiados en los últimos meses, o lo que a algunos medios les gusta llamar “crisis de refugiados”. Nuestro pensamiento inicial fue: ¿cómo podemos ayudar? Nuestro siguiente pensamiento fue: cómo podemos hacerle frente al actual malentendido de que los refugiados son una carga en la economía de su nuevo hogar, cuando en verdad pueden contribuir con su crecimiento.

Decidimos hacer una plataforma en línea para refugiados que quieren empezar su propio negocio, conectarlos con mentores e inversionistas que los pueden apoyar. Los refugiados emprendedores cuelgan sus ideas de negocios. Los voluntarios desde su propio país se unen al portal como mentores, para ofrecer consejos y ayudarlos a iniciar su negocio. También esperamos que ideas prometedoras lleguen a los inversionistas en nuestra plataforma que quieran financiarlos.

GV: ¿Quién está detrás de esta plataforma y qué esperan lograr?

bidx: Bidx main product is called a bidx Portal, which is an online platform for matching entrepreneurs to mentors and investors, as well as providing automated ways for evaluating business plans and collaboration among members of the platform. This product is mainly sold to incubators, banks and business school in order to manage their startup communities. We usually tailor each portal to the wants and needs of our clients. This time we created a portal hoping that we can provide some help to entrepreneurial refugees.

bidx: El principal producto de bidx se llama bidx Portal, que es una plataforma en línea para juntar emprendedores con inversionistas, y para ofrecer maneras automatizadas de evaluar planes de negocios y colaboración entre miembros de la plataforma. Este producto se vende principalmente a incubadoras de negocios, bancos y escuelas de negocios para gestionar sus comunidades de empresas nuevas. Por lo general, adaptamos cada portal a las necesidades y deseos de nuestros clientes. Esta vez creamos un portal con la esperanza de ofrecer ayuda a los refugiados emprendedores.

GV: ¿Cómo funcionará el sitio?

bidx: The website offers members the ability to present a business plan, search for business plans, give feedback, connect and communicate. The website provides some basic measures for evaluating businesses, like how complete a business plan is. Mentors and investors can rate businesses so that good plans can easily be found. We rely heavily on volunteers, especially those who advise entrepreneurs in the form of mentorship.

Our team will start off by moderating the website ourselves. Our goal is to find sponsors in a later stage, when the number of entrepreneurial refugees is substantial.

bidx: El sitio web ofrece a los miembros la posibilidad de presentar un plan de negocios, buscar planes de negocios, dar comentarios, conectarse y comunicarse. El sitio web ofrece algunas medidas básicas para evaluar negocios, por ejemplo cómo es un plan de negocios completo. Mentores e inversionistas puede calificar los negocios para que los buenos planes sean fáciles de encontrar. Dependemos muchos de voluntarios, sobre todo de los que asesoran a emprendedores en la forma de mentores.

Nuestro equipo empezará moderando el sitio nosotros mismos. Nuestro objetivo es encontrar auspiciadores en una etapa posterior, cuando la cantidad de refugiados emprendedores sea sustancial.

GV: ¿Cómo piensan crear conciencia sobre este proyecto?

bidx: Our plan is to raise awareness among two groups of people; the refugees and the volunteers. As for the refugees, once we are done with translating the website into Arabic, we will start contacting refugees centers and try to distribute flyers explaining our concept. As for the volunteers, we will use social media, and our friends in mainstream media to spread the word among those who are willing to volunteer by joining as mentors or possible investors.

bidx: Nuestro plan es sensibilizar entre dos grupos: refugiados y voluntarios. En cuanto a los refugiados, una vez que hayamos terminado de traducir el sitio web al árabe, empezaremos a contactar con centros de refugiados y a tratar de distribuir volantes que expliquen nuestro concepto. En cuanto a los voluntarios, usaremos medios sociales y a nuestros amigos en medios de comunicación tradicionales para que comuniquen entre los que quieran ser voluntarios para que se unan como mentores o posibles inversionistas.

GV: ¿Está disponible esta plataforma para que otros países inicien proyectos similares o está limitada a los Países Bajos?

bidx: It is available for all entrepreneurial refugees all over Europe. The size of our team has made us focus on the Netherlands more in this stage, as it is easier for us raise awareness locally. However, we want to offer as much support as possible to all refugees in Europe.

bidx: Está disponible para refugiados emprendedores en todo Europa. El tamaño de nuestro equipo nos ha hecho enfocarnos más en los Países Bajos en esta etapa, pues nos es más fácil crear conciencia localmente. Sin embargo, queremos ofrecer tanto apoyo como sea posible a todos los refugiados en Europa.

GV: ¿Es viable tener una plataforma en línea para refugiados?

bidx: We have asked ourselves the same question. We know many refugees own smartphones and use them to communicate with each other about where to go. We also hope refugees reception centers and the volunteers there can help by giving the refugees access to computers. Additionally, we are actively looking for sponsors who can help us provide refugees with access to computers and internet connections.
In the end, we hope our portal will be useful to entrepreneurial refugees, to set up their business and improve their welfare.

bidx: Nos hemos hecho la misma pregunta. Sabemos que muchos refugiados tienen smartphones y los usan para comunicarse entre ellos sobre dónde ir. También esperamos que los centros de recepción de refugiados y los voluntarios ahí puedan ayudar dando acceso a computadoras a los refugiados. Además, estamos buscando activamente auspiciadores que puedan ayudarnos a darle a los refugiados acceso a computadoras y conexiones a internet.
Al final, esperamos que nuestro portal sea útil para refugiados emprendedores, a que establezcan su negocio y mejoren su bienestar.

GV: ¿Las leyes de asilo en Europa permiten a los refugiados empezar su propio negocio y trabajar?

bidx: That’s a very valid question, and we have done our research in this area. Let me first emphasise that we would like to our portal to be inclusive to all refugees regardless of their asylum status. In the Netherlands,  refugees are not permitted to work during the first six months of the asylum procedure. Later on, things change 180 degrees, once they are naturalised as citizens.
As for the latter case, there are already thousands in the Netherlands, and we hope our portal will help them right away. While for the former case, one possibility we are thinking of, is the Dutch startup visa scheme. As explained by the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service, the startup visa “makes it possible for ambitious entrepreneurs to apply for a temporary residence permit for in the Netherlands. The residence permit for  ‘startup’ entrepreneurs allows ambitious entrepreneurs to start an innovative business for a year”. It is worth mentioning that the start-up must be guided by an experienced facilitator in the Netherlands.
As for other European countries, it is clear that different states have different regulations. That’s why we hope the local mentors in our portals will work with refugees and guide them through ways they can legally start their business.

bidx: Es una pregunta muy válida, y hemos hecho nuestra investigación al respecto. Primero, déjame enfatizar que nos gustaría que nuestro portal sea inclusivo para todos los refugiados, sin importar su condición de asilo. En los Países Bajos, a los refugiados no se les permite trabajar los primeros seis meses del procedimiento de asilo. Después, las cosas cambian en 180 grados, cuando se naturalizan como ciudadanos.

En este último caso, ya hay miles en los Países Bajos, y esperamos que nuestro portal los ayude de inmediato. Con el primer caso, una posibilidad que pensamos es el plan de visa holandesa para empresas que empiezan. Como lo explica el Servicio Holandés de Inmigración y Naturalización, esta visa para empresas que empiezan “posibilita que emprendedores ambiciosos soliciten un permiso temporal de residencia para los Países Bajos. El permiso de residencia para emprendedores ‘que empiezan’ permite a emprendedores ambiciosos iniciar un negocio innovador durante un año. Vale mencionar que la nueva empresa debe estar guiada por un facilitador experimentado en los Países Bajos.

Para otros países europeos, es claro que diferentes estados tienen diferentes regulaciones. Es por eso que esperamos que los mentores locales en nuestros portales trabajen con los refugiados y los guíen por vías en las que pueden iniciar sus negocios legalmente.
