Con solo siete años, Coryn Anaya Clarke de Trinidad y Tobago se distingue por ser la autora publicada más joven de su país. Hasta ahora, ha escrito y autopublicado siete libros infantiles (uno por cada año de su vida) y en la actualidad está trabajando en tres libros más.

Es una ávida lectora que está decidida a motivar a otros niños a descubrir la alegría de la lectura. Además, piensa que los libros son una gran forma de que la gente aprenda sobre la región caribeña. En 2022, fue una oradora invitada en el Festival Alliougana Literary en Monstserrat y también ha participado en el Festival Bocas Lit en Trinidad y Tobago.

Entrevistamos a Coryn (y a su madre, Dionne Baptiste) por correo electrónico para hablar sobre la magia de los libros, el gozo que encuentra en la escritura y la lectura y, dados los efectos negativos que la pandemia del COVID-19 causó en una región con tasas de alfabetización normalmente altas, el motivo por el que cree que los libros pueden cambiar el mundo.

Global Voices (GV): ¿Por qué te gusta tanto leer y escribir?

Coryn Anaya Clarke (CAC): I started reading when I was two years old and I think that encouraged me to want to write books of my own. I wrote my first book when I was four. I write about my life and things that I learn. I’m still learning a lot so I have many more books to write and I’m also working on books about mystery and adventure […] so you should stay tuned for that. Writing is a form of expression, a fun way to share my thoughts about stuff […] I really like that I could inspire other children too.

Coryn Anaya Clarke (CAC): Empecé a leer cuando tenía dos años y creo que eso me motivó a querer escribir mis libros. Escribí mi primer libro cuando tenía cuatro años. Escribo sobre mi vida y sobre las cosas que aprendo. Aún estoy aprendiendo mucho, por lo que tengo muchos más libros que escribir. También estoy trabajando en libros de misterio y aventura […], así que deben estar atentos. Escribir es una forma de expresión, una forma divertida de expresar mis pensamientos sobre las cosas […] Me gusta mucho haber podido inspirar a otros niños también.

GV: Cuéntanos sobre el proceso de escribir tus libros.

CAC: I write about my experiences a lot so I guess life inspires me. I write the books and I speak with my illustrator [Tiffany Nicholas] about my ideas for the covers and the pictures, and she does it. When that is done, my Mummy gets it up on Amazon and I let everyone know where they can buy them.

CAC: Escribo mucho sobre mis experiencias, así que supongo que la vida me inspira. Escribo los libros y hablo con mi ilustradora [Tiffany Nicholas] sobre mis ideas para la portada y las ilustraciones, y ella las hace. GV: ¿Cómo ha sido la reacción a tus libros? 

CAC: People are really supportive so far. They’re only available in one book store in Trinidad, [but] other children like to read my books because it shows them they could do things like that, too, if they want. Grown-ups get my books because they say it inspires their children to read more.

CAC: La gente me ha apoyado mucho hasta ahora. Los libros solo están disponibles en una librería en Trinidad, [pero] a otros niños les gusta leer mis libros porque les muestra que también pueden hacer cosas así si quieren. GV: De todas las historias que has escrito, ¿cuál es tu favorita y por qué?

CAC: «Chronicles of Coryn: Meet My Heroes.» I really love that one because it’s like a gift to some of the people who inspire me — [people like] my mummy [who] is a journalist, so she writes a lot. She reads a lot, too.

CAC: Chronicles of Coryn: Meet My Heroes. Me encanta porque es como un regalo para algunas de las personas que me inspiran; [personas como] mi mami [que] es una periodista, así que escribe mucho. Lee mucho también.

GV: Cuéntanos sobre tus experiencias en los festivales literarios.

CAC: Amazing! With Bocas Lit Fest, I was the face of the children’s writing competition a few years ago. [With Alliouagana Festival] I met other authors, made new friends and I got to tell many new people about my books. Montserrat is beautiful, I can’t wait to visit again. I want to do more book tours across the Caribbean.

CAC: ¡Increíbles! En el festival Bocas Lit, fui el rostro del concurso de escritura infantil hace unos años. [En el festival Alliouagana] conocí a otros autores, hice amigos nuevos y pude contarles a muchas personas nuevas sobre mis libros. Montserrat es hermoso; tengo muchas ganas de ir otra vez. GV: ¿Qué le dirías a otros niños para motivarlos a leer y escribir?

CAC: I tell children that reading is fun; you get to learn new things and new words. Reading helps to feed your curiosity about things. When you learn new words its easier to express yourself, so read.

CAC: Le digo a los niños que leer es divertido: puedes aprender cosas nuevas y palabras nuevas. La lectura ayuda a alimentar tu curiosidad sobre las cosas. Cuando aprendes palabras nuevas es más fácil expresarte, así que lean.

GV: ¿También empezaste un club de lectura?

CAC: The Chronicles of Coryn Book Club is where we get to discuss books we’ve read and stuff like that. We haven’t had a meeting in a while, but it’s going to be restarting really soon. Jonesy’s Literacy Foundation [in honour of her great-grandmother] is also linked to the book club. That’s where we give books to children who want to read but don’t have books of their own, so we give books away, then we have meetings to discuss [them]. It’s really fun and interactive and we have authors from all over the Caribbean, as well. Anyone can join if they want to, just keep watching my website and my social media for the announcement.

CAC: El club de lectura The Chronicles of Coryn es donde podemos discutir los libros que hemos leído y cosas así. No hemos tenido una reunión en un tiempo, pero retomaremos muy pronto. GV: ¿Cuáles son tus planes para el próximo libro?

CAC: I will be publishing three books this year, so I will have 10 books by my eighth birthday. «Chronicles of Coryn: My Carnival Debut» is about my first time playing mas and I’ll be telling other children what they can expect if they’ve never played [Trinidad and Tobago Carnival] before. I’ll also release «Chronicles of Coryn: The Curious Caribbean Ballerina,» which is about the national emblems of all the Caribbean countries, and of course «Chronicles of Coryn: My Adventures in Montserrat.» I’m working on other books, as well.

CAC: Publicaré tres libros este año, así que tendré diez libros cuando cumpla ocho años. GV: ¡Increíble! Dionne, ¿motivaste de forma activa el interés de Coryn por leer y escribir desde una edad temprana o ella tenía una inclinación natural hacia los libros?

Dionne Baptiste (DB): I’ve always been an avid reader and that continued throughout my pregnancy. I read for myself and I made it a habit to read books out loud to her. That may have contributed to her love for the written word. We read to her and allowed her to ‘read’ to us even before she was able to make sense of the words on the pages. It was bonding time and we made it fun. We were pleasantly surprised when, at age two, we realised she was actually reading the books that we got her.

Reading is almost second nature to her, we’ve never had to tell Coryn to read; in fact, there are times we have to ask her to put the books away. She never leaves the house without at least one book in her bag. At this point, I think the only thing we’re doing to encourage her to read is getting her new books as she requests them.

When it comes to writing, that’s a passion she discovered on her own. She was invited to read for the read2mett initiative and that was the launchpad for her journey as an author. She was four years old when she first told me she wanted to write a book. I didn’t discourage her, but I did nothing to help. Thankfully, she did it, anyway.

Dionne Baptiste (DB): Siempre he sido una ávida lectora y eso se mantuvo durante mi embarazo. Leo para mí y empecé el hábito de leerle libros en voz alta. Eso pudo haber contribuido a su amor por la palabra escrita. Le leíamos y le permitimos que nos “leyera” incluso antes de que pudiera entender las palabras en las páginas. Era tiempo para unirnos y lo hicimos entretenido. Estábamos gratamente sorprendidos cuando, a los dos años, nos dimos cuenta de que realmente estaba leía los libros que le comprábamos.

Leer es innato para ella. Nunca hemos tenido que decirle a Coryn que lea; hay ocasiones en las que tenemos que pedirle que guarde los libros. Nunca sale de casa sin al menos un libro en su mochila. A estas alturas, creo que lo único que hacemos para motivarla a leer es comprarle libros nuevos a medida que los pide.

En cuanto a la escritura, es una pasión que descubrió por cuenta propia. La invitaron a leer para la iniciativa Read2MeTT, y fue el punto de partida para su travesía como autora. Tenía cuatro años cuando me dijo por primera vez que quería escribir un libro. No la disuadí, pero no hice nada para ayudar. Afortunadamente, lo hizo de todas formas.

GV: ¿Qué consejos les darías a otros padres para que sus hijos se interesen por la lectura y la escritura?

DB: Let them see you reading; make it fun — [and] please, don’t use reading as punishment.

DB: Que los vean leer, háganlo divertido. Por favor, no usen la lectura como un castigo.
