GV: ¿Qué puedes contarnos sobre ti?

DN: I was born on 18 November 1996 at Mbalmayo, department capital of Nyong and So'o in the Centre Region of Cameroon. After passing my A-levels in Literature and Philosophy at Mbalmayo-Oyack College in 2013, I chose to do a Bachelor's degree in Bilingual Literature (French-English, with a Contrastive Studies module) at the University of Yaoundé I, which I graduated from in 2016. Then, in 2021, I got a Professional Qualification Certificate (PQC) in Editing and Project Management from the CFPAM (Arts et Métiers Professional Training Centre) of Ekounou, Yaoundé. In June 2022, I got accepted in a Master's Degree in Translation, Narration and New Media at the University of Evry — Paris Saclay (France). Unfortunately, I wasn't able to fully grab this opportunity to study abroad as my family's financial situation meant that I couldn't afford to go. As I was passionate and still hoped to fulfil my dream, in October 2022, I finally went to the ISTIC [fr](Higher Institute in Translation, Interpreting and Communication) of Yaoundé. I am currently finishing my MA in Linguistic Engineering and Translation [French-English-LSF (French Sign Language)].

Professionally speaking, in addition to being a computational linguist and professional translator, I am also a writer and an English and French as a foreign language teacher. I have been working at the Collège Catholique Bilingue de la Retraite for over six years. This is one of the most prestigious secondary schools in Cameroon. My latest work, which was awarded the 4th Young Cameroonian Writer Prize (Prix de la Jeune Plume Camerounaise) in 2015 (literary Prize awarded by the Genoo Foundation), is a theatrical piece called Ça sort comme ça sort[fr].

My main interests are languages, literature and culture. I am passionate about translation and its technologies, but also teaching, because I believe that passing on knowledge to posterity falls under the divine.

DN: Nací el 18 de noviembre de 1996 en Mbalmayo, capital del departamento de Nyong-et-So, región Centro de Camerún. En 2013, luego de aprobar los exámenes de Literatura y Filosofía en Mbalmayo-Oyack para ingresar a la universidad, decidí cursar la licenciatura en Literatura Bilingüe (francés-inglés, con un módulo de Estructuras Comparadas) en la Universidad de Yaundé I, donde me gradué en 2016. En 2021, obtuve un certificado de calificación profesional (CQP, por su nombre en francés) en Montaje y Gestión de Proyectos en el CFPAM (Centro de Formación Profesional de Artes y Oficios) de Ekounou, Yaundé. En junio de 2022, fui aceptado para una maestría en Traducción, Narración y Nuevos Medios en la Universidad de Evry, miembro asociado a la Universidad de Paris-Saclay (Francia). Desafortunadamente, no pude aprovechar del todo la oportunidad de estudiar en el extranjero, ya que la situación económica de mi familia no me lo permitía. Como soy muy entusiasta y todavía esperaba cumplir con mi sueño, en octubre de 2022, asistí por fin al Instituto Superior en Traducción, Interpretación y Comunicación (ISTIC) de Yaundé. En la actualidad, me encuentro en el tramo final del máster en Ingeniería lingüística y Traducción (francés-inglés) y lenguaje de señas en francés.

En lo profesional, además de ser lingüista computacional y traductor profesional, me desempeño como escritor y profesor de inglés y francés. Trabajo en el Colegio Católico Bilingüe de la Retraite desde hace más de seis años, una de las secundarias más prestigiosas de Camerún. En 2015, mi última creación, una obra teatral llamada Ça sort comme ça sort, fue distinguida con el IV Premio al Joven Escritor de Camerún, galardón otorgado por la Fundación Genoo.

Mis principales aficiones son los idiomas, la literatura y la cultura. Me apasiona la traducción y sus herramientas tecnológicas, y también la enseñanza porque creo que la transmisión del conocimiento a la posteridad entra dentro del plano de lo “divino”.

GV: ¿Cómo descubriste GV y qué te llevó a unirte a esta comunidad?

DN: The first person who told me about Global Voices (GV) was my Editorial Translation teacher at the ISTIC [fr] in Yaoundé. He was telling me what translation skills he found in me and asked me if I wanted to join GV, which he thought, as a volunteer translator, would not only be a great experience for me, but would also be a great way to gain visibility. I thought this was a great idea. Then, he sent me the application link and that's how it all started. At the same time, I was lucky enough to be selected alongside four of my classmates to do an internship with GV. For the director of the ISTIC [fr]— Professor Charles SOH — GV gives a huge opportunity to Professional Translation students to see what professional life is like and to get more familiar with the new technological trends in the translation industry. So, between my teacher's will, my school's will and my own will, I was led into an amazing professional adventure, and it's only the beginning.

The reason I wanted to join GV was because it is one of the biggest volunteer translators communities in the world. We are free to choose between several articles about different topics. Each one of our translations are accessible to millions of people around the world — so we increase our experience and visibility. The other aspect, which is very important, is that GV is at the cutting edge of technology, particularly with its platforms WordPress and Trello. From learning how to use these tools, the choice of the text to translate on Trello and its review on WordPress GV, to the configuration of our user profile, we are automatically getting up to speed with international professional practices in the translation industry – we're a kind of techno-translator!

DN: La primera persona que me habló de Global Voices (GV) fue mi profesor de Traducción Editorial en el ISTIC en Yaundé. Me dijo sobre las habilidades de traducción que notaba en mí, y me preguntó si tenía interés en unirme a GV, que según su entender, sería una gran experiencia y una excelente manera de obtener visibilidad al participar como traductor voluntario. Pensé que era una gran idea. Luego me envió el enlace de solicitud y así comenzó todo. Al mismo tiempo, tuve la suerte de ser seleccionado junto a cuatro compañeros de clases para realizar una pasantía en GV. Para el director del ISTIC, el profesor Charles SOH, GV da la enorme oportunidad para que los estudiantes de traducción profesional conozcan la vida real laboral y se familiaricen con las nuevas tendencias tecnológicas del sector de la traducción. Por lo tanto, el deseo de mi profesor, el de mi escuela y el mío, me llevaron a esta increíble aventura profesional, y ese fue solo el comienzo.

La razón por la que quise unirme a GV fue porque se trata de una de las mayores comunidades de traductores voluntarios del mundo. Tenemos la libertad de elegir entre varios artículos sobre diferentes temas. Millones de personas en todo el mundo pueden acceder a cada una de estas traducciones, lo que nos permite incrementar nuestra experiencia y visibilidad. Otro aspecto muy importante es que GV está a la vanguardia de la tecnología, sobre todo con sus plataformas de WordPress y Trello. Desde el aprendizaje del uso de estas herramientas, la elección del texto para traducir en Trello y su revisión en WordPress GV, hasta la configuración de nuestro perfil de usuario nos permiten automáticamente ponernos al día con las prácticas profesionales internacionales en el sector de la traducción, ¡y convertirnos en una especie de “tecnotraductores”!

GV:¿Por qué traduces principalmente artículos sobre ciencias sociales y política?

DN: Well, humans wouldn't be able to understand all aspects of life and the world around them if it wasn't for social sciences. Given the severity of the current issues of the global economy, in a context that is both alarming and holder of new challenges, and faced with the new character of its impact on the functioning of our societies, social sciences are precious. They are the knowledge tool of evolutions and mechanisms that affect our societies. As a professional translator, it is my duty — through the articles I translate — to promote the circulation and transfer of ideas and information from a culture to another, so that, all while breaking linguistic and cultural barriers, everyone in the world has access to the same knowledge and opportunities.

In addition, if you want human rights to be respected, if you want gender equality, democracy to be applied everywhere in the world, migrants and refugees to be respected and protected, corruption and climate changes to diminish… then simply translate anything about politics! Translation doesn't break linguistic and cultural barriers, it raises awareness while giving fair access to ideas and information to everyone, all social classes, all genders. Today, translation goes far beyond the simple rendition of a text from one language to another, from a culture to another, it's a development tool that keeps changing and moves the world forward on all fronts.

DN: Bien, los seres humanos no podrían comprender todos los aspectos de la vida y el mundo que los rodea si no fuera por las ciencias sociales. Por la gravedad de los problemas actuales de la economía global dentro de un contexto alarmante, con nuevos desafíos y frente a la dimensión de su impacto en el funcionamiento de nuestras sociedades, las ciencias sociales se vuelven esenciales. Representan la herramienta para conocer la evolución y los mecanismos que afectan a las comunidades. Como traductor profesional, es mi deber, mediante los artículos que traduzco, promover la circulación, la transmisión de ideas la información de una cultura a otra, de tal forma que al romper las barreras idiomáticas y culturales, todas las personas del mundo puedan acceder a los mismos conocimientos y oportunidades.

Además, si buscas el respeto por los derechos humanos, la igualdad de género, la aplicación de la democracia en todo el mundo, el aprecio y la protección de los migrantes y refugiados y la disminución de la corrupción y los cambios climáticos… ¡simplemente traduce todo sobre la política! La traducción no solo rompe las barreras idiomáticas y culturales, sino que también crea conciencia mientras brinda un acceso equitativo a las ideas y la información a todo el mundo, a todas las clases sociales y a todos los géneros. Hoy en día, la traducción va mucho más allá de la simple conversión de un texto de una lengua a otra o de una cultura a otra; se trata del desarrollo de un instrumento que cambia de manera constante y que permite que el mundo avance en todos los aspectos.

GV: ¿Qué mensaje te gustaría transmitir?

DN: First of all, it's important to say that the translation industry is extremely competitive. You can be an extremely talented translator, but the lack of experience can quickly be an obstacle to professional growth. Translation is an art, and you have to regularly use this art and keep up with its evolution and the new trends in the industry to remain competitive. By translating for GV, I refine my art, I improve and it gives me the possibility to find my place amongst the “masters”.

Moreover, people nowadays are more on the lookout for money than anything else, especially in Africa where life conditions aren't always favourable. Indeed, volunteering isn't very popular. Yet, it becomes evident that, by being a volunteer translator for GV, you accomplish a very noble task: translating so that language is no longer a barrier to understanding global ideas and news. So, we are translators of global utility, and this si why we need to be more known and recognised.

DN: Ante todo, es importante mencionar que el sector de la traducción es muy competitivo. Puedes ser un talentosísimo traductor, pero la falta de experiencia puede convertirse rápidamente en un obstáculo para tu crecimiento profesional. Traducir es un arte, y debes practicarlo de manera regular y mantenerte al día según su evolución y las nuevas tendencias en el sector para mantenerte competitivo. Al traducir para GV, perfecciono mi arte, mejoro y obtengo la posibilidad de encontrar mi lugar entre los “maestros”.

Es más, hoy en día la gente busca conseguir dinero sobre todas las cosas, en especial en África, donde las condiciones de vida no son siempre las más favorables. Es más, el voluntariado no es muy popular. Sin embargo, resulta evidente que al convertirte en un traductor voluntario para GV, cumples con una tarea muy noble: traducir para que el idioma deje de ser una barrera para comprender ideas y noticias internacionales. De esta manera, nos volvemos traductores globales, característica necesaria para convertirnos en profesionales más conocidos y prestigiosos.
